50 shades of white

50 Shades of White from a Pot’s Perspective (2021)

In my project, 50 Shades of White from a Pot’s Perspective, I am engaging in a conceptual exploration centred on the psychological and emotional effects of the colour white. By intentionally stripping away vibrant colours, I aim to create a meditative space that invites reflection on the nuances of white itself.

Through extensive research, including a variety of literature and online discussions, I have discovered that white embodies a dual nature. On one hand, it offers a profound sense of peace and safety, evoking feelings of order, cleanliness, and comfort. These attributes contribute to its appeal, as white spaces often foster clarity and tranquillity, serving as a refuge from the chaos of our daily lives.

However, I have also come to recognise the potential downsides of an overwhelming presence of white. Excessive whiteness can lead to feelings of sterility, isolation, or even emptiness, highlighting the importance of balance in our environments. This realisation has prompted me to reflect on my own relationship with the colour. I find myself consistently drawn to white because it provides me with a grounding sensation of calm and belonging amid a world that is often filled with distractions and restlessness.

While the core of this project revolves around the philosophical implications of the colour white, I have also drawn inspiration from Minimalism and the Conceptual Movements. These artistic philosophies encourage a focus on simplicity, clarity, and the essence of form. By incorporating these influences, I hope to guide the viewer toward an immersive experience that emphasises the essential elements and principles of design, revealing how they can harmonise to create balance within a composition.

Ultimately, 50 Shades of White from a Pot’s Perspective serves as both a personal exploration and a broader commentary on the emotional resonance of colour. It invites viewers to consider their own experiences with white, encouraging them to engage in a dialogue about how colour shapes our perceptions, emotions, and environments.
